pgBackRest release numbers consist of three parts: major, minor, and patch. A major release may break compatibility with the prior major release, but v2 releases are fully compatible with v1 repositories and will accept all v1 options. Minor releases can include bug fixes and features but do not change the repository format and strive to avoid changing options and naming. Patch releases contain bug fixes for the most recent minor release. Feature releases are scheduled for the third Monday of January, April, July, and October. Patch releases are scheduled for the third Monday of any other month as required. Documentation for the v1 release can be found here. The notes for a release may also contain Additional Notes but changes in this section are only to documentation or the test suite and have no direct impact on the pgBackRest codebase. Page Checksum Errors and Object Store Prefetch Released October 18, 2026 IMPORTANT NOTE: The restore command will now error and stop if any restored file contains an invalid page checksum, which leaves the cluster incomplete and unable to start, so the restore must be rerun. The expire command will now refuse to expire if the oldest retained backup would contain checksum errors, which also prevents archive from being expired in that repository. Set checksum-page-error=n to warn instead of erroring. Features: Add checksum-page-error option to error on invalid page checksums. (Contributed by Andrew Pogrebnoi. Reviewed by Douglas J Hunley, David Steele, Greg Sabino Mullane, Stefan Fercot. Suggested by Greg Sabino Mullane.) This option applies to the backup, restore, and expire commands. The backup command defaults to a warning for each file (as before) and now also reports the total number of checksum warnings at the end of the backup. The restore and expire commands default to an error. Previously the restore command did not report invalid page checksums at all. Support for GCS Workload Identity Federation. (Contributed by Adol Rodriguez. Reviewed by Douglas J Hunley, David Steele.) Set repo-gcs-key-type=web-id and set repo-gcs-key to an external account credential file, e.g. as generated by gcloud iam workload-identity-pools create-cred-config. The web identity token is exchanged for an access token without a service account key. The token file is reloaded on each exchange to pick up rotated tokens, e.g. Kubernetes projected service account tokens. Service account impersonation is not supported. Prefetch multi-file/range …
